You may want to check for empty cells:
=if(a1="","",countif(sheet2!a:a,"*"&a1&"*")0)

or

=isnumber(match("*"&a1&"*",sheet2!a:a,0))
or
=if(a1="","",isnumber(match("*"&a1&"*",sheet2!a:a, 0)))
