It sounds like you've lost the password to open the file which isn't
good news (out of the four types of protection XL uses this is the most
robust). These sites list a number of products / services that will
recover / remove your password but they're not free.

This one however, is but has a few limitations and is well worth trying
before you start paying for the service.
