Default Excel slow on saving

Just a FYI,
I can open a new "workbook" takes a fraction of a second.
I can close that workbook, takes a fraction of a second.

I can type one single character in 1 cell eg "a"

then it takes 40 seconds to close.
must have trouble somehow writing to disk

Do you think it wise to uninstall, then re-install MSOffice?

| Ok Jim,
| I'll spend today doing a defrag and
| I'll uncheck everything for a test.
| I'll also visit the links I was offered prior
| and work through some more ideas.
|
| FYI
| my diskcleanup option

| | Rodney,
| |
| | I don't even know if Win 98 has a disk cleanup option.
| | In any case, using the file compress option in disk cleanup is not
| | recommended in the tips I have read.
| |
| | Unchecking the add-ins was to prevent problems with
| | having add-ins installed but no menu items available to activate them.
| | (That is assuming you deleted the user8.xlb file)
| | This is also a verification that none of them are causing the problems.
| | I would still try opening and closing XL with all of them unchecked.
| |
| | The other place to check is in the xlStart folder to determine what
| | other programs (if any) are starting with XL. Take a look at...
| | "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\XLStart"

| | Hiya Jim, Gordon,
| | | I don't have room for Grandmum, but would like to hear
| | | your results.
| | Your loss :), she makes a trifle to die for.
| |
| | The Chicken Soup recipe failed.
| | current status:
| | Opening XL 20 seconds
| | After opening a file 1.539Kb , I resorted and closed the file
| | the file closed in 40 seconds, then left another file "Personal.xls"
| | which took 20 seconds.
| | I opened the file again, did not touch it, and exited
| | this took 70 seconds to close.
| | I take pride in good computer husbandy, and expected the temp file
| | to be minimal however the status was
| |

| |
| | Most of the files are 0Kb files generated by ACDSee
| | with an extension of "descript.ion"
| |
| | I had squillions of "Add-ins" ticked
| | so unticked all bar the "Autosave" which I like to have.
| |
| | I have yet to defrag, but do that on a regular basis
| | I have an ME defrag engine on my Win98 machine.
| |
| | I have never run "Disk cleanup" ever, is this a "risk" at all ?
| | I have a 4 million record database aboard, and rather not
| | take any risks on HDD shuffling.
| | Thanks for your hints thus far.
| | Best Regards
