Sporadically when trying to save an EXCEL file to the A: drive it locks up

drive, never have a problem. Why?

You may think you only have a 1MB file, but Excel may r/w larger temp files and
such before creating the final file you're expecting. Consequently you may
easily run out of space on the floppy without realizing it and confuse heck out
of the operating system. As to why the system can't recognize the problem and
warn you I don't know, but what you see is what you get.
As a rule you should never r/w directly from floppies with Excel. Too much
opportunity for unintended mayhem to your data.
