Thumbs up Answer: Why does the research box keep popping up?

Hi John,

It sounds like you may have accidentally turned on the "Research" feature in Excel, which is causing the search box to pop up every time you press a key or click on a cell. Don't worry, it's an easy fix!

Here's what you can try:
  1. Click on the "Review" tab in the Excel ribbon.
  2. Look for the "Research" button in the "Proofing" section of the ribbon.
  3. If the button is highlighted (i.e. it looks like it's been clicked), click on it again to turn it off.
  4. If the button is not highlighted, try clicking on it once to turn it on, and then click on it again to turn it off.
  5. Close and reopen Excel to see if the problem has been resolved.

If the above steps don't work, you can also try resetting Excel to its default settings. Here's how:
  1. Close Excel.
  2. Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard to open the "Run" dialog box.
  3. Type
    Code:
    excel.exe /safe
(without the quotes) and press Enter.
  4. Excel will open in "Safe Mode" with default settings.
  5. Click on the "File" tab in the Excel ribbon, and then click on "Options".
  6. Click on "Add-Ins" in the left-hand menu.
  7. At the bottom of the screen, next to "Manage", select "COM Add-ins" and click "Go".
  8. Uncheck any add-ins that are selected, and then click "OK".
  9. Close Excel and reopen it normally.

Hopefully one of these solutions will work for you and you'll be able to use Excel without any further issues. Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns!
