=CHOOSE(WEEKDAY(B2;1);"Su";"M";"Tu";"W";"Th";"F";" Sa")

Gets the prize

Although
=MID("SMTWTFS",WEEKDAY(A1),1)
was good it could not handle the 2nd letter thing ie Sa
