Default How to open a linked graphic?

I have no run into the "design flaw" in Excel 2003.

I have no problem opening a hyperlink to a graphic *.jpg in my default
graphics viewer which is FastStone Viewer.

Have you checked your graphics file association?

Sounds like it is set to IE

Ok, I'm being told now that this is a known design flaw in Excel.
Excel cannot open a graphic file (jpg, png, etc) in its associated
program (as it can other file types). It is coded to always open such
files in Internet Explorer instead.

I found that surprising.

I have many in-sheet hyperlinks that open files, and they open as
expected in the program to which they are associated. BUT links to
graphic files (jpg, png, etc) open only in Internet Explorer - not the
associated program. It's driving me crazy. Why won't it open in the
correct program? I'm simply selecting an in-sheet object such as a
clipart, and then using INSERTHYPERLINK to enter the path to my
picture object I want opened. What am I doing wrong?

If nothing else, how can I put in a macro for the file to open in a
PARTICULAR program (then I can assign the macro to my link object).

(I first asked this in two other Excel non-programming groups but got
no replies, so I'm trying here being I've such great help in the past
from you folks.)

Thanks,
