yes it was a web page, and great suggestion. but right clicking on the
"object" did nothing, no pop up menus or grips, or anything. deleting the
cell, the row, or the column did not remove the thing either- only cutting
and pasting the data into a new spreadsheet. I'm beginning to suspect this is
just a graphics error - some kind of ghost image.

Where did you copy _from_, not a web page by any chance? If so, you got a
special characte pasted in along with the text.
Try Rt+clicking the character in the cell (press ESC if necessary to close
the popup menu, don't click away to close it). You should see little round
'handles' at each of the 4 corners of the imaginary box that surrounds the
character. Press 'Delete' and it should go away.

none of these suggestions worked - it appears that it is not an "object" as
excel defines an object. for instance when I tried "Edit--Go
to--Special--Objects and
hit Delete" excel told me there were no obects in the document.
could it be some sort of indicator like the little red triangle that appears
when a cell has a comment attached to it?

If it's the only object, you can use Edit--Go to--Special--Objects and
hit Delete.
Otherwise, use the selector tool on the drawing toolbar or design view from
the Control toolbox.

a black and gray object like a radio button appeared in the upper left
corner
of a cell after a cut/paste action. there was a radio button in the
original
document next to the text I was copying. when you click on it, the
toolbars
go gray, and the object changes like a radio button, but nothing else
appears
to happen. nothing happens on right-click. this object obscures part of
the
text in this cell.
what is it and how do I get rid of it?
