To find the maximum value in a range try

=MIN(IF(A1:A1000=MAX(A1:A1000),ROW(A1:A1000),""))

and for the minimum
=MATCH(MIN($A$1:$A$1000),$A$1:$A$1000,0)

Both are array entered by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Enter NOT simply enter. If you
do it correctly Excel will put curly brackets {} around the formula. You
CAN'T type these yourself.
