Hi Ray,
A circular reference happens when the cells in the formula include the
cell that the formula is in. if you move the formula to another column
or somewhere, this should stop happening.
To get an YTD total, you will need a unique reference, such as a pay
number for the person paid, or similar. Then you would use the SUMIF
formula as below:
=SUMIF(A:A,Pay Number,D:D)
This formula looks for the pay number in column A and returns the total
of the numbers in column D (for example). On your spreadsheet, you need
to use the column with the pay number, then the criteria and then the
amount column. SUMIF(Criteria Range,Criteria,Sum Range)
Rather than type individual criteria into loads of formulas, it is
quicker to copy a list of the pay numbers into the worksheet and use
the formula below:
=SUMIF(A:A,G2,D:D)
This uses the same data as above and G2 is the first pay number. You
then pull this formula down to the bottom of the list of pay numbers.
