Maybe your windows regional setting uses a dot as the decimal point.

Does it work with
=1000*9/7.5

If you want to change the character that is used for the decimal point:
windows start button|control panel|regional settings applet

I have a really really annoying experience with Excel, 2000 as well as 2003.
Sometimes, it is not possible to write a formula like 1000*9/7,5. Excel
reports error in the formula and it is the , comma that does it. It occurs
not in all my Excel files, just to add to the hopeless situation.

This only occurs if a Word document has been opened.

Only (?=) way to solve it is to close Word and Excel.
Any other had this nasty experience?
