Say your list is from A2 to A100 with some values and some blanks.
First highlight the range a2 to A100
Then Edit/Goto/Special blanks.
Then enter the following formula
=if(A1<A2,A2,A1) and hit control-Enter
(Control Enter merely fills the formula in all selected cells)
