do it work if you just do

=\\abc\[excel1.xls]sheet 1'!$G$7
while excel1.xls is open, then

when the Excel1.xls is then closed does it still work.

If so, then you can do that in book2 for the links and the descriptions,
then use you hyperlink formulas to refer to these cells.
