Try this event in the Thisworkbook module that run when you save your workbook
It will fill in the date in Sheets("Sheet1").Range("a1").

Private Sub Workbook_BeforeSave(ByVal SaveAsUI As Boolean, _
Cancel As Boolean)
'If you save the file the date will be placed in cell A1 of Sheet1
Sheets("Sheet1").Range("a1").Value = "Updated on " & Date
End Sub

I am not real good with VBasic so a formula like =cell(filename",A1) would
be good.
