Default Deleting cell borders before file opening error occurs?

A few people have posted that they could open the file in OpenOffice, then
remove some of the formatting, save it and then excel would open that file ok.

http://www.openoffice.org, a 60-65 meg download or a CD

I have a large Excel 2000 workbook that won't open because it has "Too many
different cell formats." My solution is to somehow get in and delete all the
borders on the one non-hidden worksheet to try to get rid of a few hundred
cell formats. Is it possible to stop the error message and delete the
borders or cell shading before the error occurs?

I have already gone to a website that supposedly sells software that will do
this for 100 british pounds. There has got to be an easier way.

Thanks in advance,
Tim
