I can't see a (non-macro) way of doing *exactly* what you want, but I've got
a compromise work-around if you want it ...
In your Star column(s) put a Star Symbol in each cell right down the column
(I copied one in from Word - Insert/Symbol)
Then format the font in the Star column to white (or whatever the background
colour is).
Then use Conditional Formatting to change the font colour of the cells in
the Star column to the appropriate colour based on your logic rules.
