Default Format column

In xl2000 and later, this can be done with conditional formatting

See Debra Dalgleish's site

http://www.contextures.com/tiptech.html

see conditional formatting under C. There are several entries.

How can I change the colour of the cells in a column depending on the
contents of one of its cells. The text in the cell is selected from a drop
