You can delete as many rows as you like when autofilter is enabled. And I've
never had trouble sorting rows with autofilter enabled.

But if you meant you have to turn off autofilter when you want to insert/delete
columns, then you could upgrade to xl2002/xl2003. You can delete columns from
an autofilter range in those versions.
