Chip Pearson has some notes to help diagnose startup problems at:
http://www.cpearson.com/excel/StartupErrors.htm
You might be able to recover more by using another program--both xl2002+ and
OpenOffice have better reputations for opening files that earlier versions of
excel couldn't.
(
http://www.openoffice.org, a 60-65 meg download or a CD)
If the file is really important, there are commercial recovery services. I've
never used it, but you might want to check into:

Hi,
I have a workbook with a macro and when I try to open it I get an
application error message that says Excel.exe exception access
violation. The document closes after I get the error message. The error
message pops up before I have time to do anything although I did try
disabling macros and using CTRL + Break but to no avail.
How can I retrieve the data from the spreadsheet and the code from the
macro?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
