Default how can i get excel to sequentially add numbers to new worksheets?

Working with an invoice type setup, I need excel to look to the previous
sheet and add 1 to it creating the next invoice number in line. So that when
I create a new sheet it will automatically create the next available number
without having to go and manually enter the reference sheet each time. Is
this an array function? Can anyone give direction as to the number system I'm
looking for?
