Are you working in some kind of Terminal or Citrix environment???
Or perhaps you don't have sufficient rights???
Or some app that prevents changes to the registry? I had to uninstall
AdWatch for similar reasons.
Anyway what you describe (customise, unchecking that box) *is* the
right way to do it!
