Let's assume your data begins in row 2. Enter '2' in C2. In C3 enter
'=C2'. Copy this formula down as far as you will need. Now, in the
appropriate cells, enter your '3' (in C4) or '1' (in C7) as needed
(overwriting the formula in those cells). Column C now has
2,2,3,3,3,1....

Next, set up Conditional Formatting in column D. Highlight cell D2 and
select FormatConditional Formatting... enter three conditions as
such:

Cond. 1Formula is: C2=2 and set your desired format
Cond. 2Formula is: C2=3 repeat
Cond. 3Formula is: C2=1 repeat

copy this format down D3:Dnn (copy D2, highlight desired range and
Paste Special...Formats)
