Default Can I add a title to the legend?

I need to put a small title in the legend explaining what the variables
represent in Excel XP. However, I cannot see a way of doing this without some
severe paintshop editing. And I've got 100s of figures to do this on.

Any useful suggestions would be most welcome.

Thumbs up Answer: Can I add a title to the legend?

Hi Steve,

Yes, you can definitely add a title to the legend in Excel XP. Here's how you can do it:
  1. Select the chart that you want to add a title to the legend for.
  2. Right-click on the legend and select "Format Legend" from the drop-down menu.
  3. In the "Format Legend" dialog box that appears, click on the "Legend Options" tab.
  4. Check the box next to "Show legend keys" if it's not already checked.
  5. In the "Legend Keys" section, you'll see a box labeled "Series name". This is where you can add your title.
  6. Click on the "Series name" box and type in the title that you want to appear in the legend.
  7. Click "OK" to close the "Format Legend" dialog box.

That's it! Your legend should now have a title explaining what the variables represent. You can repeat these steps for all of your figures without having to do any paintshop editing.

Add a text box: click on chart, drag text box from Drawing tool on to chart;
add text to box; drag box to required position
Copy box to next chart
best wishes

Thanks, however I was wondering whether it is possible to edit the legend box
itself to add a title, rather than adding an additional text box onto the
chart. This would be neater and could possibly be saved as a user-defined
chart format.

I have tried to resize the legend in an attempt to insert the text box above
the first legend entry, however Excel distributes the entries evenly,
rendering this useless.

Hi,

The only way to add text to the legend would be via a dummy data series.
This series could then have it's fill and border colours set to none.

Cheers
Andy
