Default Subtotals

I am using excel 2007. In a worksheet I have values ranging fron D9 to
D1143. They are divided into 34 subsections. at the end of each section I
use the formula =subtotal(9,start cell number.end cell number). I get the
subtotals correct. I then highlight the entire range from D9 up to the line
below the last subtotal which is cell D1144 and click on the sum icon to get
the grand total of all the subtotals but no figure is showing up in the cell
at all, it remains blank. I use subtotals in a number of my spreadsheets
before and had no trouble but none extended to cells as far down as 1143. Is
there a possible bug in the system? Please for any suggestions

Try just clicking in cell D1145 and press Alt/=
or type =Subtotal(9,D9:D1144)
