Default how to use the + sign in text

a friend is trying to type in 2 names into a cell. The first name will have a
+(plus) infront of it and the second will have a -(minus) infront of this.
She then wants to be able to colour all the minus names. As soon as she puts
the + at the stasrt of the cell it automatically thinks its a formula,even
after she has changed the formatting to text for the worksheet.

Any help appriciated

Either precede it with an apostrophe ('),
or pre-format the cell as TEXT

If you add ' excel will treat the cell as text so enter

'+ John will be shown as + John
