In Excel 2003 AutoCalculate is switched off, how can I switch it back on? I
have used Tools, options, caluclation and ticked automatic and it does not
work.

That should work.

What happens when you do this? How do you know it's not working?

You may want to try:
Group all the sheets
Select a single cell
Edit|Replace
what: = (equal sign)
with: = (equal sign)
replace all
and ungroup the sheets.

Maybe it'll wake up excel's calculation engine????
