I was distracted and held down the shift key for a long time, a message
flashed up warning me, but before I could read it I had lifted my finger and
the message went. The key strokes now give me strange symbols instead of
numbers and the caps lock does not work. It has not effected Word.

Probably its Sticky Keys

In the Control Panel open the Accessibility Options.
Click on the Keyboard Tab
Clear the Sticky Keys checkbox
