Default Excel 2003: Not enough system resources to display completely

One of our users receives an error message that is similar to this: "Not
enough system resources to dislpay completely" in Excel 2003. I thought the
problem was due to a particular workbook, but other users with similar
machines can open the same workbook with no errors. Also, this user receives
the error message in Excel even when no workbooks or other programs are open.

The system has 512 MB of RAM, and I've increased the Windows page file to
the recommended size. Also, I installed Office Service Pack 1. None of these
efforts have resolved the issue. Any ideas? I can't find this error
referenced in the MS KB for Excel 2003.

Hi Matt,

According to your description, I know that when a user opens an Excel 2003
workbook, he/she receive an error message: "Not enough system resources to
display completely". This problem doesn't occur when opened on other
users' computers.

If I misunderstood your concern, please feel free to let me know.

Based on my experience and research, this problem could be caused by a
variety of factors. I would suggest you perform the following test and let
me know the results:

#1 Empty Temp folder
-------------------------
a. Click Start-Run, type "%temp%" (without the quotation marks) in the
Open box.
b. Click OK to open Temp folder
c. Delete all the files in the Temp folder.
d. Then check if this issue occurs.

#2 Start Excel under safe mode
---------------------------------------
a. Click Start-Run, type "Excel /s" (without the quotation marks) in the
Open box.
Note: There is a space between the Excel and the /s switch.
b. Click OK to start Excel.
c. Click File - Open to open the particular workbook to check if this issue
occurs.


At the same time, in order to better assist you, I would like to gather
some information about your configuration and environment. Please help me
understand your situation by answering the following questions:

1. I am a little unsure the meaning of "this user receives the error
message in Excel even when no workbooks or other programs are open." Could
you please explain the meaning of "message in Excel even when no
workbooks"? Does it mean "no other workbooks" except the problematic
workbook?

2. What is the operating system installed on this problematic computer?

3. When does this issue occur, opening, working on, closing, or printing?

4. Does this issue occur on any other Excel workbook or only this
particular workbook?

5. Is there any anti-virus software installed on this computer? Please try
scanning the disk to ensure there is no any virus on this computer.

I've done two spyware scans (Adware and MS Beta) and a virus scan. No malware
found, except tracking cookies. I've tried using Excel and nothing else, and
the error still occurs.

Your description of the problem is accurate. I tried solutions 1 and 2, but
they didn't fix the issue. Here are the answers to your questions:

1. Even if I have Excel running with NO workbooks open, the error message
continues to appear.

2. Windows 2000

3. The error occurs when opening the workbook. The workbook DOES open, but
anytime a different cell is clicked or a key is pressed, the dialog box
appears again.

4. All workbooks opened on this computer

5. Yes. Norton Corporate Edition 9.0 with the latest definitions. A scan of
the full system returned nothing. I also checked for spyware using two
different programs.

Ada, when I restart Windows in safe mode, the error message does NOT appear.
What could that indicate?

Word, PowerPoint, etc., are not affected at any time. I've emailed the

Hi Matt,

First of all, thank Layla for her kind reminder. I'm sorry for that I
ignore you are running Windows 2000.

Based on your information, I know that this message doesn't occur under
Windows safe mode. Since safe Mode loads a minimally protected-mode
configuration, disabling Windows device drivers and using the standard VGA
display adapter, some third party applications and some hardware device or
drivers cannot be used during Safe Mode.

To narrow down this problem more, please perform a clean boot on Windows
2000. Windows Clean Boot will isolate the applications we currently use in
a stand alone environment. If some .dll files which affect this issue are
not loaded during Windows Clean Boot, we may be able to narrow down the
root cause of the problem. To use System Configuration Utility to perform a
clean boot, follow the steps below:

(a) Save the msconfig.ex_ attachment (I sent it to you) on your desktop and
rename it to msconfig.exe. Double-click it to run the System Configuration
Utility.

(b) On the General tab, choose Selective Startup, click to clear the
"Process System.ini File", "Process WIn.ini File", and "Load Startup Items"
check boxes. You cannot clear the "Use Original Boot.ini" radio button.

Note: You can click the Normal Startup radio button to return to the normal
Windows Startup after the test.

(c) On the "Services" tab, click to select the "Hide All Microsoft
Services" check box, and then click "Disable All".

(d) Click OK and restart your computer.

Please test the issue in Windows Clean Boot Mode and let me know the
results.

In the meantime, I wonder if you perform all the tests in my previous
response such as update printer driver (or change another printer as

Hi,

I am also have the same problem, with Excel 2000 and Excel 2003
in windows XP. The problem occur after I install several Ms Security Patch,
I don't know which one. Even when I uninstall the security
patch I installed before, the problem still exist.

The message occur when I run Excel, even without opening xls file.

Our system has P4/256MB/XP pro.
