the problem ive got is one of my explanners at work has created a document
which has been password protected so as it can only be opened via read only

Can you get the file opened or is it password to open?

Internal sheet and workbook passwords are easy to crack.

File passwords are more difficult.

See John McGimpsey's site for more info.

Once opened you will be able to remove the "rad-only reccomended" option.
