What have I done which has resulted in a blue square instead of data??

It's difficult to know exactly without looking at the worksheet, but as a
first guess I would suggest that you check to see if there's any conditional
formatting applied to the cell(s) that are giving you trouble - You may be
entering some data that triggers a formatting rule to turn the cell blue.
