how to calculate an age from 10/8/1943

Try something like this:
Where A1 contains the birthdate...
B1: =DATEDIF(A1,TODAY(),"y")& "Yrs "&DATEDIF(A1,TODAY(),"yd")&" Days"

For documentation on the DATEDIF function see Chip Pearson's site:
http://www.cpearson.com/excel/datedif.htm

Does that help?
