Default What is the purpose of a lookup function?

if you have a table of values such as
Column A Column B
A 3
B 4
C 8
D 32
E 10

And I wanted to see what number corresponded to D for example. I could use

=Lookup("D",A1:A6,B1:B6)

this would return 32

Suppose you have a list of motor parts listed in column A, and the retail
price of each part in column B. You can now ask excel to look for a part in
the first column, and show you the corresponding price from the second.
