Colon at the end of excel file name(ex: problem.xls:1, problem.xls
 
Within the same file there seems to be two versions. How do I get rid of it?

Colon at the end of excel file name(ex: problem.xls:1, problem.xls
 
You have two windows open to the same workbook.

Select the window to close and hit ctrl-F4.

Save the workbook the way you like it.
