Default sumif help

I have a simple sumif formula which I can't get to sum. My current formula is
=SUMIF(M3,"x",F3:G3). What I want to do is check to see if cell M3 has an x
in it; if it does I want to add the values in cells F3 and G3. Now all this
formula does is check for the x in M3 and puts the F3 value in the cell. It
doesn't add F3 and G3.
