I want column "A" to be numbered 1 to 500

how do make column numbers 1 throuh 500
 

Enter in A1:

=ROW() and drag down ro A500

or:

Enter 1 in A1, 2 in A2, highlight both cell and copy down on the fill handle

And one more for good measure.
Enter 1 in A1
Grab the fill handle and drag down to A500
Hold down Ctrl then let go of the left button, then let go of Ctrl
