Your question makes me wonder if you have been lead astray by the SUM
function.
While =SUM(A1,B1) will indeed add the two values, it is better to use =A1+B1
SUM is best used fro ranges as in =SUM(A1:A100) which is easier to use than
=A1+A2+A3......+A99+A100
