my cursor turns to a large white plus sign and when i move it it shades the
area blue and I'm not allowed to enter any data.

Most often caused by hitting the F8 key and putting yourself into "Extended
Mode".

If you see EXT on status bar hit F8 again to clear.

Another fix can be tapping the wheel on your wheelie-mouse a few times.

BTW.......always a good idea to post the version of Excel you're running.

Back to square one.

A fat white cross is the normal cursor for Excel.

Are you saying that if you select any cell then attempt to select a different
cell, the area between gets highlighted?

Are you holding the left button down and dragging the cursor?

Is Excel acting like the button is being help down?

What happens if you use the arrow keys to navigate?

I would try banging a little harder on the wheel a few times.
