Numbers appear as ##### instead of the actual number, how to fix?

Some of my stydents have entered numbers into cells or done a summation of a
series of cells and they get ###### signs in place of the actual
number...when mousing over the cell with the ###### a fly out appears with
the actual number. How do we make the ###### signs appear as the actual
number?

Normally adjusting the column width should fix that.
