Default Weird Links Behavior

I can't explain what is happening, and we won't get Microsoft to change
Excel 2003 so all I can suggest is that you avoid the situation either
by not opening both A and B in the same instance of Excel or by having
A and B quietly open and close C in the way I suggested before.
