HOW CAN I SORT A "RANKED" COLUMN WITHOUT LOSING THE FORMULA?

I have created a ranking sheet for sales performance that automatically ranks
based on sales numbers. The rank formula works fine, but when ever I try to
sort the data based on the numeric ranking the formula in the column loses
its integrity.

You could try making the range that is evaluated an absolute range, so the range referenced by each formula won't change after the sort. For example:

Change: =RANK(a1,a1:D100)
To: =RANK(a1,$a$1:$D$100)
