Default print preview does not look like worksheet screen

In Excel, I format columns to auto-fit, but in the print preview, it shows
some cells (with the longest line) bunched up and requiring more row width.
Why doesn't the preview look like the table? Makes autofitting a pain
because I have to keep checking the print preview for any possible errors. I
use MS Ofiice 2003.
