How can I format a cell (specifically cell color) based on the value of the

OK, I found the conditional formatting... My question is now..
When was the function VLOOKUP added to excel? and when we the CONDITIONAL FORMATTING added to excel? I am create a spread sheet for my wife's school class, and although we have O2K3 at home, other teachers at her school have various version from O97 throug OXP.
