how do you add up alpha???
 

I have set up a holiday planner to add up holiday entitlement, etc and have
put in box SL when they have a day off sick. How can add this to my
running holiday or get to add up???

Just a guess....

For values in A2:AE2

This formula counts the occurrences of "SL" in that range:
AF: =COUNTIF(A2:AE2,"SL")

Does that help?
