How do I stop cell borders dissappearing when pasting data?

When I paste data from information available on the web and paste it into
Excel the page view changes by removing the visible cell borders. This makes
for a strange looking screen and makes cell selection tricky.

How can I restore the worksheet to the standard format?

I assume by "borders" you mean "gridlines".

These gridlines disappear due to the fact that the cell background color has
been changed to "white" by the pasted-in information.

You cannot prevent this but you can fix it.

The default for cell background in Excel is "No Color"

Just select the cells and change the BG color to "no color".
