Excel's got pretty strong help on formulas. In an empty cell, go to the menu
bar and select Insert Formula. In the text box, you can enter some keywords or a description of what you're trying to do, and you'll get back a list of likely relevant functions. When you choose a function, and click OK, the Function Arguments dialog will indicate the required (bold) and optional arguments, and what they represent. At the bottom of the dialog window, you'll also see a description of the function's purpose and see a link for 'help on this function.'
