Sumproduct

I'm sure this has a simple answer but I'm missing it.
In examples like this one:
=SUMPRODUCT(--(A1:A100="Apr 04"),--(C1:C100="New"),E1:E100)

What do the dashes (--) mean.

thanks

Johannes

spaces... just leave them out... might have an additional meaning that i'm
unawere of though

Hi Johannes, wal50
DON'T leave them out. They 're essential. They coerce the boolean
values (TRUE/FALSE) to numeric values (1/0). For an explanation see:
http://www.xldynamic.com/source/xld.SUMPRODUCT.html
and

Hi
no problem. You have probably used the '*' syntax instead then there's
no need for the double minus :-))
