Your information might be stored as Text. Try one of 2 things:

Copy a blank cell
Select your range you are trying to sum
Do a "Paste Special"-Add

- or -

In your sum function embed the VALUE() function and commit with
CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER. For example if your range is A1:A100:
=SUM(VALUE(A1:A100))
