Using a MODE formula in a Pivot Table

I have a Pivot Table and would like to use the MODE function instead of
the standards they provide (sum, min, max, etc.) -- so I have gone to
Pivot Tables Formulas Calculated Field and attempted to use the
following formula:

=MODE(fieldname)

It doesn't give me errors and it creates a new field called Field1 and
adds it to the Pivot Table, however, it gives me the sum.

I have never worked with adding custom formulas before -- and help is
not much help.
