How do you show gridlines on part of a sheet and hide the gridlines on other
parts of the same sheet?

Remove all the gridlines
(Tools|Options|View tab)

Then add borders where you want them:
format|Cells|border tab

Select some cells and FormatCellsPattern set to "white".

The gridlines in that area will be covered over.
