I just want to know what the purpose and uses of the merging function. Is it
for names or text primarily?

Merging cells makes one large cell out of two or more single
cell. Usually it is used for text entry. That said, one should
avoid merged cells at all costs as they cause problems with
copy/paste and sorting.
